In order to provide a greater-than-lecture exposure to issues of the built environment, Parsons School of Constructed Environments brings small groups of students to local projects of the highest interdisciplinary quality for tours led by the professionals who make these projects possible. Scales of 3D Printing from Jewelry to the Building Component

.MGX brings innovative 3D printing techniques to designers, architects and artists from around the - all with a degree of detail, complexity and speed that cannot be offered by other production techniques.
Tour The Interior Design/Architecture practice of Calvin Tsao and Zack McKown is broad based both in the geographic breadth of its work and in the variety of projects that the firm undertakes. Firmly believing that all design relates to issues of living, Tsao and McKown's environments and objects do so within vastly varied cultural contexts.

Christine Platt Lecture: joint SCE / GPIA
Strategies for the worlds "other" cities, particularly her work on the sustainable urbanization of Nairobi have brought attention to the work of Christine Platt. Her involvement in the UN Habitat Medium Term Strategic and Institutional Plan 2008 - 2013 brings her here to us in NYC. President of the Commonwealth Association of Planners, Vice-Chairman and member of KwaZulu, The Natal Provincial Planning and Development Commission, and previously President of the South African Planning Institute, Christine Platt works with a wide array of Global and Local organizations on issues of urbanization.

Della Valle Berheimer Lecture, Blog Discussion & Book Launch

AIA Honor Award winning architects Della Valle Bernheimer have come out with a new book "Think/ Make", and Andrew Bernheimer has caused a stir with his "Design Observer" Blog Posting of 8/25/09. They speak to us about their work.

Juhani Pallasmaa Lecture

In our current global networked culture that puts so much emphasis on the virtual and the visual, the mind and the body can become detached and ultimately disconnected. Finnish Architect Pallasmaa here continues the exploration begun in his classic work The Eyes of the Skin by further investigating the interplay of emotion and imagination, intelligence and making, theory and life.

Shigeru Uchida Lecture

Esteemed Japanese designer Shigeru Uchida, President of Tokyo's Kuwasawa Design School and recipient of multiple international design awards, has for decades engaged in diverse design projects worldwide… from furniture, light fixture and product design, to architectural interiors and urban planning. He will speak to us about his work.

"Building Energy Positive" Exhibit

Through the combination of conservation measures and technologies that concentrate ambient energy, the next generation of buildings will become energy producers rather than consumers. This exhibit will show case examples of building integrated solar concentrators now under development. These projects represent multi year research collaborations between academic institutions and industry. Included are projects entitled The 3rd Skin (Parsons), Blubber (RISD), IC Solar Facade System and Advanced EcoCeramic Envelope Systems (RPI), Solar Louvers (TU Darmstadt). The exhibit will include drawings and mock-ups of full-scale prototypes.

Growing Urban Habitats:
Seeking a New Housing Development Model

Authors Katie Swensons and SCE Dean Wiilliam Morrish host a roundtable discussion about "Growing Urban Habitats", rephrasing questions and renaming issues in the housing debate. The discussion will explore opportunities for designing superior housing that is respectful of current communities and sustainable for generations yet to come.

Flatpack City Exhibit

Deborah Gans Studio & Anselmo Canfora's Initative reCOVER

The exhibit will engage two practices that thoughtfull plan deployments in communities of need.
Anselmo Canfors'a Initiative reCOVER - a University of Virginia School of Architecture design/build program established to assist humanitarian organizations with efforts to improve the built environment for populations affected by natural and man-made disasters, , known for their recent work in Uganda.
Deborah Gans Studio - New York based architects known for their work on projects for New Orleans and the Sioux community in the Dakotas, exhibited in the United States Pavillion in the last Fall's 11th Venice Architecture Biennale.
Both groups demonstrate their approach to "Planning" and "Building" as collaborative efforts well informed by thoughtful research, substantive interdisciplinary exchanges, and direct community involvement.

Detour: The Architecture of Norwegian Tourist Infrastructure

Parsons SCE, in collaboration with The Guggenheim Museum and The Architectural League, mount this exhibit of spectacularly designed infrastructure, and hosts a series of talks around town about the role of design and art in infrastructure and public amentities, both in cities and in the landscape.
