In order to provide a greater-than-lecture exposure to issues of the built environment, Parsons School of Constructed Environments brings small groups of students to local projects of the highest interdisciplinary quality for tours led by the professionals who make these projects possible.

Guggenheim Symposium
The Art and Architecture of Public Amenity.

The Guggenheim Museum and The Architectural League in collaboration with Parsons SCE, mount this Symposium around the topic of the role of architect and artist collaborations in infrastructural projects in cities and the landscape. The symposium is held in conjunction with the exhibition "Detour, the Architecture of Norwegian Tourist Infrastructure" at Parsons' Aronson Gallery.

"Building Energy Positive" Exhibit and Solar Decathlon Event

The next generation of buildings will become energy producers rather than consumers through a combination of conservation measures and the use of new technologies that concentrate ambient energy. This exhibit will show case examples of building integrated solar collectors now under development. These projects represent multi-year research collaborations between several academic institutions and industry. Included are projects entitled The 3rd Skin (Parsons), IC Solar Facade System and the Advanced EcoCeramic Envelope Systems (Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute ), Solar Louvers (Technical University Darmstadt).

Michael Fark: Light Up The World Foundation

1.6 billion people do not have access to electricity. They use kerosene lanterns as the primary source of lighting in their homes. LUTW is an international organization that provides renewable energy lighting technologies to communities around the world. They have illuminated the lives of over 200,000 in over 50 countries. Learn how this organization has improved education and literacy in the developing world and how designers might be informed by such initiatives.

The Michael Kalil Endowment for Smart Design Awards Presentations


Established in 2001 in memory of designer Michael Kalil at the School of Constructed Environments, the mission of the Endowment is twofold: to foster the understanding of the design intersections between nature and technology and to support a heightened sense of responsibility for increasing the sustainability of built environments.

Renny Ramakers, Droog Design: Recent Works

Co-founded and directed by art historian and critic, Renny Ramakers, Droog has since1993 made a statement on design, with their no-nonsense, down to earth design mentality. Droog stands for a luxury of content and experience that changes perspectives on daily life-whether it is authenticity, humour, slowness, engagement, or nature, the abundance of what is scarce is true luxury.

Dakota Jackson, Furniture Designer: On-Site Insight Tour

An accomplished musician (piano, guitar and double bass) who has designed pianos for Steinway (and once owned a piano-making factory of his own), a dancer and now a highly successful designer with a furniture factory in Queens. Dakota Jackson hosts us at his Manhattan Showroom, designed by Alexander Gorlin.

Claudy Jongstra, Fabric Fashioner / Williams & Tsien, Architects: On-Site Insight Tour

In her unique textile fabrications Jongstra uses only raw materials - raw silk, raw linen, raw camelhair, raw cashmere and especially raw wool -which she treats with original techniques that result in some of the most creative felts ever seen, each created for specific needs of the interior environment.

Ronit Eisenbach: "Installations By Architects: Experiments in Building & Design" Exhibit and Book Talk

The first survey of its kind, the exhibition and book "Installations by Architects", coauthored by Ronit Eisenbach and Sarah Bonnemaison, features fifty of the most significant projects from the last twenty-five years by a wide range of architects, including Anderson Anderson, Philip Beesley, Diller + Scofidio, John Hejduk, Dan Hoffman, and Kuth/Ranieri Architects. Projects are grouped in critical areas of discussion under the themes of tectonics, body, nature, memory, and public space.

Linnaea Tillett / Tillett Lighting Design: On-Site Insight Tour

Tillett Lighting Design crafts highly nuanced lighting programs, with a reputation for artistry, technical innovation and functionality.Founder Linnaea Tillett holds a doctorate in environmental psychology. Her innovative approach incorporates a thorough understanding of the perceptual, behavioral and psychological effects of light. She has extensive experience in lighting landscape, infrastructure, architecture, public art, luxury interiors, and fine art and hosts us at her Brooklyn Studio.
