Tailoring Form

..a brief look at the anonymous history of the template

An Exhibit from the template collection of architect Natalie Fizer Forley, with Lecture.

This exhibition situates the template within a broader category of what historian David Turnbull refers to as “representational technology.” A template can be a framework, a pattern, a form, a device, or a set of rules used to generate things or parts of things. The template typically acts as an intermediary, translating concept into physical form. Yet the notion of the template as a mediating device, in suggesting a more instrumental relationship to the object it produces, relegates the status of the template to a mere tool. As a result, the template has been under-scrutinized and has all but been omitted from the discourse of representation.

BronXscape

The Design Workshop at The New School presents an exhibition documenting its latest project, BronXscape, the rooftop space of a new apartment building for young adults aging out of foster care. The Design Workshop trains students to design and construct a medium-scale project for a nonprofit client. This year, the students teamed up with the Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter (NCS), an organization that provides housing and support to homeless
men and women.
