The Foundation Program is the
first year of study for the majority of students entering the BFA at Parsons.
This intensive program introduces students to a broad base of concepts,
skills and critical practices in art and design in preparation for the
second year of study in their major area.
The curriculum is composed of six courses each semester: 2D Integrated
Studio, Laboratory, 3D Studio, Drawing Studio, Critical Reading and Writing
and Perspectives in World Art and Design. These courses complement each
other and build analytical, conceptual, and critical approaches to studying
art and design. Students identify topics of inquiry, sharpen observation,
advance points of view and develop work in a wide variety of media in
these courses.
The program runs a series of workshops that offer students additional
support and a means to learn specific skills and processes ranging from
research methods to construction techniques and digital technologies.
The workshop also sponsors talks by our faculty and visits professional
art and design studios.
NYC gives Foundation students access to a vast array of resources and
opportunities. Through site visits and community-focused projects, first
year students are introduced to the city and encouraged to learn from
and interact with its institutions and neighborhoods. The Foundation Program
prepares first year students for success in any major field of study at
Parsons and beyond.
