Chair's Welcome

Welcome to aidl - one Department comprising architecture, interior design and lighting design. aidl prides itself in applying the most creative design thinking and learning to the most challenging issues facing the built, and particularly the urban, environment. With over 28,000 square feet of studio and shop space located just steps away from Union Square in New York's Greenwich Village, aidl students have access to a range of on-site research facilities and programs, including the Fabrication Shop, the Light Lab, two Computing Labs, the Angelo Donghia Materials Center, and The Design Workshop. All aidl students have dedicated workspace in our atelier building at 25 East 13 th Street. But most importantly, our 250 students work intimately with over 110 of the finest designers and design theorists worldwide, and have access to the intellectual depth of the eight divisions of the New School University.

The Department offers two undergraduate Bachelor of Fine Arts programs (Architectural Design and Interior Design), two graduate programs (Masters of Architecture and Masters of Fine Arts in Lighting Design), a Summer Intensive design program, and the Design Workshop. Each combines a rigorous, discipline-specific design education with a significant exposure to the social, environmental and technological forces that are transforming our human habitat. We are an intimate academic community dedicated to the urgent task of designing a more intelligent world, from the scale of a light fixture to that of a city plan.
