Design 1 & 2
Foundations of interior design are developed through projects that
focus on light, movement, scale and materials. Representations of
these phenomenal qualities are made physical through drawings,
model-making and multi-medial representations. Programming is
introduced to compare and contrast alternative uses and onventional
programs. These projects encompass a range of scales from the
immediate interior that shelters the body to its overall location in
the community.
Design 3 & 4
Junior year studio builds upon foundations in order to design and
construct prototypes of furniture and objects offering the opportunity
to translate ideas into built form. Understanding the processes by
which objects are made inherently raises issues of production such as
the unique and mass-produced. These modes of production open a
dialogue on the role of aesthetics, culture and society. Projects
continue to address both the large scale and small scale.
Design Studio 5
The first senior studio introduces the dimensions of the interior that
affect the body's senses, such as the sound of space, movement through
space, and the materiality of space at a greater level of complexity as
technology continues to permeate the interior realm. Technology plays
a role in the studio through methods of representation, materials and
structures in order for students to consider their role as designers
and builders within the larger context of the global environment.
Vertical Design Studio
The independent studios, or verticals, afford students the opportunity
to focus on individual interests and test their design abilities.
Typically three studios are offered in which the content is determined
by the individual instructors. Topics offered by each studio
accommodate diverse investigations across different scales and media.
Instructors present their studio topics during the first day of class
and students choose a studio through a lottery.
